The study or comparison of two (or more) charts in order to determine the nature of the relationship, or prospect for relationship, between the entities involved. In synastry, one looks to see whether the potentialities for relationship expressed in one chart can be actualized in the chart of the other (and vice versa). It is an attempt to see the relationship from the perspective of the members involved. Mutual aspects are used between the two charts, viewed either with the aid of an aspect grid or by placing planets from one chart around the chart of the other using a bi-ring wheel.
The term "synastry" is often used to refer to the whole array of chart-comparison techniques, not just the chart-to-chart comparison methods described above. Other chart-comparison techniques treat the relationship as an entity in itself and involve the use of a third chart (derived from the charts of the two people involved), which acts as the horoscope of the relationship. These chart comparison techniques include the following:
- Relationship Charts
- Composite Chart
- Coalescent Chart
- Swap Houses
- Mutual Aspects
- Structural Similarity.
