1 article for "Adams, John Couch"

Adams, John Couch [Astro*Index]

(1819-1892) English astronomer.

Born at Laneast, Cornwall; died at Cambridge. His investigation of the residuals in the motion of Uranus indicated the presence of an undiscovered body beyond Uranus. The work was given to Airy, the director of the Greenwich Observatory, who failed to make the search. Thus, Leverrier is credited with the discovery of Neptune. Adams calculated the orbit of the Leonid meteor swarm, became president of the Royal Astronomic Society, and professor of astronomy at Cambridge.
