Adelard of Bath [Astro*Index](1090?-1150?) English scholar.
Tutor of the English prince who became King Henry II. Travelled extensively in Greece, Asia Minor, and northern Africa, during which time he learned Arabic. Returning to England, he translated Euclid from Arabic into Latin, thus introducing Europe to the works of the Greek writer. His translation of al-Khwarizmi introduced the so-called `Arabic' Numerals, providing a solid base for the later work of Fibonacci. Written for the layman, his book, Natural Questions, summarized his knowledge of Arabic science.
