Anaximander [Astro*Index](a-nak'si-man-der)
(BC610-546) Pupil of Thales.
Helped introduce science from ancient East to Greece. First Greek to use the sundial, which was used many centuries earlier in Egypt and Babylonia. Aware of the north-south curvature of the Earth, he conceived the Earth to be a cylinder (rather than a sphere), and created a map of the entire world as he knew it. He perceived life to have come from water. Famous for his ability as a timekeeper, he envisioned the sky as a complete sphere (the Celestial Sphere) which revolved about the pole star, and was aware of the Obliquity of the Ecliptic.
