Ayanamsa (also spelled as Ayanamasha) [Prima]

A Sanskrit term used to indicate the difference in arc between the starting point of the tropical and the sidereal zodiacs. An astrological chart based on the tropical zodiac may be converted to the sidereal zodiac by subtracting the ayanamsa for the date of the chart. Several different ayanamsas are currently in use. In Western astrology, the fiducial (starting point) used is defined by the Fagan/Bradley ayanamsa. The same system was used by ancient astrologers in Egypt and Babylonia. In India, several different values are currently in use, the most popular being the Lahiri ayanamsa.

Ayanamsa [Munkasey M.]

The difference in zodiacal longitude degrees that theSidereal and Tropical zodiacs are apart from each other. There are several different schools of thought on what this value should be. One of the more popular schools of thought in the Western World places this value at about 24 degrees for the year 1979, and increasing slowly at the rate of precession.
