Bode, Johann Elert [Astro*Index]

\boh'duh\ (1747-1826) German astronomer.

Born in Hamburg; died in Berlin. Began writing astronomical texts in 1766, and was made director of the Berlin Observatory in 1786. He published an immense star catalogue in 1801. He is best-known for a mathematical curiosity which he published in the 2nd edition of a popular book on astronomy in 1772. Although often referred to as Bode's Law, it was independently noted by Johann D. Titius, and is, therefore, properly called the Titius-Bode Law.
