Chiron [Prima]

A body — at times called an asteroid, at times, a comet or planetoid — whose orbit lies between Saturn and Uranus. Chiron was discovered on Nov. 1, 1977 by Charles Kowal.

It is named after Chiron, the wise centaur who was a healer and mentor/foster-parent/tutor of many Greek heroes. Half man, half horse, Chiron represents the holistic balance of instinct and intellect — the animal and human natures.

Various passages in classic mythology hint at Chiron's role in dealing with the shadow side of Jupiter and Sagittarius. Chiron was granted immortality for his selfless service but later sustained a untreatable poison wound that caused him eternal suffering. As a result, he gave up his immortality to Prometheus, who was thus freed from an endless punishment inflicted on him by Jupiter.
