De la Rue, Warren [Astro*Index](1815-1889) British astronomer. Born at Guernsey, Channel Islands; died at London.
Was first to photograph the Moon. In 1858, he devised the photo-heliograph, which was used for solar photography, and has become a daily routine at solar observatories around the world. Observing the 1860 total eclipse of the Sun, in Spain, he discovered the Solar Prominences, which are seen as jets of red flame around the Moon's disk during a solar eclipse. This discovery, along with Schwabe's sunspot cycle, began the study now called Astrophysics.
