In astrology, a fiducial point is a standard or reference of measurement for the beginning of the zodiac, generally considered, since the time of Hipparchus in first-century BC Greece, to be 0°Aries, though not always considered so, and not in all systems. A fiducial point is a necessary convention in an astrology based on spherical mechanics, for as Ptolemy observes, "there is no natural beginning to the zodiac, since it is a circle" (Tetrabiblos I.10)
