Immersion [Astro*Index]

Almost obsolete.

Referred to the moment at which an eclipse of the Sun or Moon began, or the beginning of an occultation; the term Emersion was used for the ending of same. Modern usage has replaced these terms with First and Last Contacts of Penumbra and Umbra for eclipses, and Exterior and Interior Ingress and Egress for Transits (across the solar disk).
