The fourth largest of the asteroids, it was discovered in 1804 and is named after Juno (in Greek, Hera), an ancient "Queen of Heaven" goddess who dates back to an era of matriarchal societies. With the advent of the patriarchal conquests of the Near East she evolved into the role of Jupiter's wife — and is often depicted as a jealous shrew with regard to his infidelities.
