Lalande, Joseph Jerome Le Francois de [Astro*Index](la-lahnd') (1732- 1807) French astronomer. Born at Bourg-en-Bresse, Ain; died at Paris.
He went to Berlin to make observations on the parallax of the moon, while Lacaille was sent to South Africa for the same effort. His catalogue of 47,000 stars was published in 1801. He wrote all the astronomical articles in Diderot's massive Encyclopedia. He observed Neptune before its discovery by Leverrier, but failed to recognize it as a planet.
