Maimonides [Astro*Index](my-mon'ih-deez)
(1135-1204) Jewish philosopher. Born at Cordoba, Spain; died at Cairo, Egypt.
Moses ben Maimon (his Hebrew name) was the most influential of all Jewish philosophers. He left Spain in his youth to avoid the rule of the barbaric invaders from North Africa, eventually settling in Egypt, in 1165, where he became physician to Saladin (the ruler who opposed Richard the Lion-Heart during the 3rd crusade). In his book, Guide for the Perplexed, he expresses his contempt for astrology, while attempting to reconcile the writings of Aristotle with those of the Old Testament.
