Servetus, Michael [Astro*Index](sur-vee'tus)
(1511-1553) Born at Tudela, Navarre; died at Geneva, Switzerland.
He gave lectures on astrology, of which he was a strong advocate. The son of a notary, he was initially headed for a career in law. But, his interests were more varied. He studied medicine at Paris, finally moving to Vienne. His theological writings were initially published anonymously, and angered both Catholics and Protestants. His writing on physiology describes blood circulation through the lungs. He sent a copy to John Calvin, a noted and powerful Protestant.
On a subsequent trip to Italy, he was passing through Geneva. Calvin had him arrested and condemned to death, and burned at the stake.
