Chromosphere [Astro*Index]A bright scarlet ring of light around the Sun seen only during total eclipses extending from the photosphere to a height of 2000 km. Its temperature ranges from 4500°K at the bottom to 1,000,000°K at the top, where it merges with the outermost layer, the corona.
