The twelfth house. A factor mentioned by Ptolemy (Tetrabiblos III.10) in the determination of the length of life using prorogative and anaretic places in an established order of consideration, essentially house by house. Of these Ptolemy says that it is not worth considering the eighth house, since it is disjunct from the Ascendant, nor the twelfth house of the Evil Daemon, which "injures the emanation of the stars in it to the earth and is also declining." He continues, "the thick, misty exhalation from the moisture of the earth creates such a turbidity and obscurity that the stars do not appear in their true color or brightness." Long-time twelfth house associations such as confinement and exile originate with this approach. Stars and planets that rise do so through the twelfth house, experiencing a kind of imprisonment, from which they are delivered as they pass into the eleventh house, the house of the Good Daemon.
