Hertzsprung, Ejnar [Astro*Index](1873-1967) Danish astronomer. Born at Frederiksberg; died at Roskilde.
He first advanced the concept of absolute magnitude. He was first to note the relationship between color and luminosity among stars, and published his work in journal of photography. Nearly 10 years later, Russell independently discovered the same relationship.

A diagram in which absolute magnitude is plotted versus temperature (or Spectral Class) for various stars. The H-R diagram allows astronomers to infer physical properties of stars from their spectra, including age.
