Leavitt, Henrietta Swan [Astro*Index]

(lev'it) (1868-1921) American astronomer.

She observed, in 1904, that longer the period exhibited by a variable star, the greater the average brightness of the star. Working with Shapley, she established the period-luminosity curve. In 1912, at Harvard's observatory at Arequipa, Peru, she studied the Magellanic clouds, directing her attention to Cepheids. From this effort, the first method of determining vast stellar distances in the universe was provided.
