(sek'kee)

(1818-1878) Italian astronomer. Born at Reggio, Emilia; died at Rome.

A Jesuit, he became Director of the Gregorian University Observatory at Rome. Between 1864 and 1868, he studied the spectra of 4000 stars, in the first spectroscopic survey of the sky. He divided the spectra into 4 classes. (The number of spectral classes has since grown with the acquisition of new spectra.)
