Strato [Astro*Index]

(stray'toh)

(BC340-270) Greek physicist. Born at Lampsacus; died at Athens.

After studying at the Lyceum in Athens, he went to Alexandria, where he is thought to have tutored the son of the Macedonia general who had become Ptolemy I, king of Egypt. With his help, Alexandria became a scientific center, maintaining that position for the remainder of ancient history. Upon the death of Theophrastus, he returned to the Lyceum where he conducted experiments, becoming known as 'Strato Physicus'. He investigated the vacuum, the level, and the transmission of sound. After his death, the Lyceum declined. While philosophy retained its hold at Athens with the Platonic Academy, scientific pursuits shifted to Alexandria.
