Carlos Santana by John Townley

Carlos Santana has the ultimate under-the-horizon bowl chart, the picture of a musician playing just to hear the music itself. Bowl charts are independent, self-reliant types who don’t need others to fill out their inner necessities. And below-the-horizon types (with all planets in houses 1-6) don’t look to publicize themselves and find fame sometimes only reluctantly and usually through others’ contacts and encouragement of circumstances.

Nothing could be truer of this brilliant Mexican blues musician, who emulated the likes of B.B. King and John Lee Hooker he heard on the radio as a child, who was an immigrant dishwasher in San Francisco until he started hanging around Bill Graham’s Fillmore Auditorium listening to the Grateful Dead and Muddy Waters and got the itch to play professionally. His name got tagged onto the band he helped organize, but not because it was his ego trip, but because the Musicians’ Union said it had to have a name, preferably the leader’s, so the group, which didn’t have a leader but operated as a collective, chose his. Talk about self-effacing.

If you want a definition of someone who can relate to the blues, try a Saturn-Pluto (oppression and poverty) conjunction at the cusp of the fourth house (family, upbringing). He walked the talk before it came out on his guitar, and with fiercely inner-driven Cancer Sun and talented Mercury-Venus mixed with a Leo Moon for a little flairification, you’ve got a super-player who hides behind his guitar and stays out of the way while the instrument does the talking.

Ever on the spiritual journey, Santana’s inclination to follow a more etheric jazz muse led him away from his original band members and the hugely popular groove the band had established. To some, including producer Bill Graham, he seemed quite lost, following after guru Sri Chinmoy and barely cooperating with efforts to keep his sound popular. By the 1990s, he was just playing behind other stars he liked for the fun of it. But with a grand air trine of  Neptune, Mars, and the MC, it’s hard to avoid fame even if you try to, and simply noodling along with others caught the eye of star-maker Clive Davis, who put him together with Bobby Martin, Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty, Eric Clapton, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, Cee-Lo, Maná, Dave Matthews, and KD Porter to make the 1999 smash hit Supernatural. He’s continued to co-star with others in a format his retreating bowl chart finds suits him at last, proving that finding your own persona trumps even the most invasive success.

Current events: He’s been humming right along, touring and helping his son’s musical career get off the ground, but as early 2008 sees his progressed Moon hit his natal, then progressed, Jupiter and round the seventh house cusp, expect him to launch into a new set of explorations, both musically and spiritually.
