In the News:

In the Valley of Elah
Tommy Lee Jones by John Townley

Despite a usually lightweight Gemini Ascendant, anyone can tell Tommy Lee Jones is a heavyweight right away, probably because he’s got that dire 1947 Saturn-Pluto conjunction angular on the IC, which makes his bottom line (fourth house) seriously intense and filled with expectant dread. Add to that a Scorpio-Leo Venus-Pluto square with a ruthless get-what-you-want tinge, and you’ve got a heavy all the way. Yet, because he has that Gemini Ascendant, helped along by Uranus rising (the comedy planet) and trine Mars, he can get away with comedy by playing against it as in Men in Black.

That Uranus is square his Sun, which gives him that grating edge, but his 12th house Moon trine Sun and Mercury allows him the smooth confidence to pull things out of his inner dark closets and literally flaunt them in your face. Jupiter, the planet of acting, is conjunct Mars on the sixth house cusp conjunct his Vertex, so it’s not surprising that he was destined to find work as an actor, despite a Harvard education and Al Gore as a roommate which could easily have led him elsewhere. Further, that conjunction is quincunx the Moon which makes for driving ambition and pegs him pretty much to promoting himself in that mode all the way to the top. He does it from the bottom up, however, as his only fire is that Saturn-Pluto, which is smoldering by nature and not exactly a blaze. All in all, this is an earth-air chart (only water is afflicted Venus), so he’s a powerhouse combination of guts and intellect, flying by the seat of his pants but having perfect intellectual comprehension of every move he makes.

Current events: Tommy Lee’s progressed Moon is heading out of Leo in a few months to join his Sun in Virgo, where Saturn has just made an entrance. He’s got some years of extra hard work coming up, testing his limits, during which time you can expect that heavy side to have the upper hand for a while…

Interestingly enough, Matrix’s own mainspinner and master astrologer Stephen Erlewine was born the very same day, only nineteen hours earlier. So why isn’t Stephen on screen wrangling aliens or Tommy Lee designing leading-edge astrology software? Only the Moon and the houses are different, but they tell the whole story. Stephen’s Moon is much earlier, making a T-cross with Venus and that Saturn-Pluto conjunction on his Ascendant, which doesn’t exactly make for stage confidence, and the Moon has nowhere near reached that ambitious quincunx that pushed Tommy Lee all the way to Hollywood. Besides, his Mars-Jupiter conjunction is on the IC which means he’d rather work at home, anyway. But his Moon is in the tenth house, so he can’t help being well-known for his work, even when avoiding the limelight. Stars each, each in is own right…
