The Avengers & West Side Story
Natalie Wood and Diana Rigg by John Townley

Diana Rigg and Natalie Wood were birthmates, born on the very same day, both talented film stars, but one died young while the other has grown old gracefully. So close yet so far. How so? Both have middle decanate air-sign Ascendants (Gemini and Libra) and you can’t help notice the similarity, especially with everything else in the same place — except for some critical differences that betray both style and opportunity for mortality.

Aside from totally different house placements, there are three other important differences, due to their being born eighteen hours apart in real time, Diana the elder of the two: the Moons are in entirely different signs and differently-aspected, and both Sun and Mercury are in different degrees. Diana’s Moon is fast and aggressive but cool (in Aries, conjunct Saturn), whereas Natalie’s is warmer and more easily passionate (in Taurus, trine Sun, Mars, and Pluto). In the former, that makes the Cancer Sun more withdrawn, whereas in the latter it simply increases its emotional intensity. That, by itself, tells you the differences in their acting styles, between an icily-sexy Emma Peel in The Avengers or killer Edwina Lionheart in Theater of Blood along with more cerebral, classical theater pursued by Diana and the hotter, more intimate parts played by Natalie in Splendor in the Grass, West Side Story, and Gypsy. Great talents, even similar looks at times, but with styles worlds apart.

Those same differences also lead to opportunities, both good and bad, that diverge incrementally, like the butterfly effect. Their career and personal paths differed radically in location and involvements, right up to the critical end on November 29, 1981, when Natalie, tipsy after midnight off Catalina Island, attempted to take the dinghy ashore alone, fell overboard, and drowned. More details here. Her progressed chart that day shows a harsh T-cross afflicting her progressed MC, involving Uranus, Jupiter, Mars, and Mercury, a jagged quartet inclined to accident and misjudgment. And, at the very moment of crisis, a transiting exact conjunction of Mercury and Uranus were precisely quincunx her Moon, adding to the effect. No such gang-up of influences were happening to Diana that day — and even if they had been, one might surmise that her cooler and more controlled native disposition might have avoided the accident.

Current events: After being made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE), Diana Rigg is astrologically between gigs, finishing a long stint as host of Masterpiece Theater and chancellor of the University of Stirling while continuing live theater, this summer starring in The Cherry Orchard at England’s famed Chichester theater festival.
