In the News:

On stage in The Seagull, Stratford-upon-Avon
Ian McKellen by John Townley

With blustery Sagittarius rising and an aggressive Mars-led locomotive chart, Ian McKellen is the prototypical Shakespearean ac-tor, with a decided classical emphasis on the last syllable. With Ascendant ruled by and trining Jupiter, he was born to transmit breadth and a theatrical landscape that was hard to fill in cinema’s often-cramped interior spaces until he reached the part of Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. In fact, early on he managed to contain his workmanlike Gemini Sun in the sixth house to any variety of smaller roles which he filled with precision and skill, thanks to Mercury also in the sixth sharpened like a razor by an exact conjunction to Uranus.

Another reason small-scale, emotional vignette-oriented personal films may have not been his best genre is that the chart lacks water, except for generational Pluto in Cancer, so you can bet method-acting was his last choice in the variety of available approaches to the art. His acting is done from precise concept (Moon in the ninth in Virgo) grinding against scripted details involving a lot of hard work (Sun in the sixth in Gemini), until something perfect comes out in the end. This is really the master craftsman at work here, ever refining his product. Mars, Saturn, and Pluto in a fixed T-square further drive the engine and tighten the screws of his character until it become a tightly locked set-piece.

Where he has let himself get unlocked has been in the more personal side of life where he has been an outspoken advocate for gay rights, leading and participating in protests and reform groups speaking for gays and lesbians, an expression of the whole chart, but of that Uranus-Mercury in particular. When you’ve heard him say it, should you be on the wrong side, you’ve been sliced.

Current events: A year past a progressed full Moon, with progressed Moon and progressed Ascendant still conjunct, he’s at the height of his fame and powers, which really unfolded from above during the time he was bringing Gandalf to the screen. With Saturn on his progressed Mercury and moving to his natal Moon this fall, the pressure is on to produce even more out of the inner McKellen machine, but the fact is, he really doesn’t have to — he can call the shots and take what he likes, since he makes even the smallest parts larger…
