Old term from Ptolemy meaning "spearbearer" and referring to a planet that rises just before the Sun or slightly after the Moon.

A Ptolemaic term describing a planet which serves as a sort of bodyguard or John the Baptist to the Sun, rising shortly before it – either in the same or the contiguous Sign. The doryphory of the Moon similarly rises after it. The best meaning of the word is spearbearer.
