Anaximenes [Astro*Index](an'ak-sim'ih-neez)
(BC570-500) Greek philosopher, born in Miletus, possibly a pupil of Anaximander.
Conceived Air to be the basic element of the universe, from which Water and Earth were derived by compression. First Greek known to have made clear distinctions between planets and stars. Robert Hand says, "Mercury precedes the division of the world into the primal duality of the Self and the Unself from which all other duality derives. Therefore he has none of the characteristics that we associate with duality – hence his sexlessness. Everything he does, however, is translated into both realms. In an alchemical treatise, he is described as both father and mother, good and evil, male and female, high and low, etc."
