Spring Tide [Astro*Index]

Because the Moon is closer to the earth than is the Sun, the Moon's tide-raising force is greater. At syzygy (New and Full Moon), the effect of the Sun increases the height of the tides; such tides are called Spring Tides. But, at First and Last Quarter, the Sun and Moon pull at right angles, reducing the effect; such tides are called Neap Tides.
