In [an earlier article] we talked about the importance of getting the correct birth data and used the 3 different birth times of Elisabeth Kubler-Ross to illustrate. We have another great example of a person deemed to be politically up-and-coming: John H. Glenn, democratic senator from Ohio and probable presidential candidate.

Our first information came from Doris Chase Doane who apparently erected a chart shortly after Glenn’s successful orbit in the spacecraft Mercury in 1962, when he was the first American to circle the earth [in space]. This was the data: Born July 18, 1921 in Cambridge, Ohio at 4:00 p.m., Central Standard Time.

Sagittarius rising and the ruler Jupiter placed in the 9th house of vision, ;long trips, faraway places and the wish to reach “for the stars” is quite appropriate. That the chart ruler Jupiter is involved in a T-square with Venus and Uranus reinforces the case. Uranus in the 3rd enables him to express in a unique way – by being an Astronaut! The T-square gives him the strength to be different. The gentle but tenacious Sun in Cancer is conjunct Mars, spurring him into action.

Matters stood thus for a while, until someone realized that in July 1921, Cambridge, Ohio was on daylight savings time. Lois Rodden in her “American Book of Charts” gives us the following information: Born July 18, 1921 at 4:00 p.m. CDT and she cites “Contemporary Sidereal Horoscopes” [an astrological company] as her source. (They supposedly only print[ed] information taken from a birth certificate.) She also informs us that the research department at the magazine “American Astrology” quotes central daylight time, whereas the American Atlas finds that this part of Ohio was on eastern daylight time. Says Rodden: “the location is apparently a versatile border.”

The chart erected for 4:00 p.m. CDT (equivalent to 3:00 p.m. CST) still has Sagittarius on the Ascendant, and now Jupiter is in an even more perfect position to substantiate Glenn’s life. It’s still in a 9th house position, but because it sits directly behind the Midheaven, we can feel his ambitions pushing for 10th house recognition. Saturn in the 10th confirms his need for tangible achievements, while the Sun in the 8th is perfect for politicians. In much of our research for vocational indicators, we have found that in politics we need a strong 8th house in order to receive support from others – be it the votes necessary to win or the money necessary to run. The stellium of planets in Cancer is ruled by a sane and controlled Moon in Capricorn, in the 2nd house of values and income, giving him the ability to see things through in a disciplined way and the wish to make a good living.

But through all of this runs one more piece of information – Mark Penfield states that according to Glenn’s mother he was born on the same day and in the same place but at 4:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Mothers are more often wrong than right, but in all fairness we thought we should at least look at the horoscope.

9 Sagittarius 06 ascending is not too different from the other 2 charts. Saturn is back in the 9th as in chart 1, but Neptune is also in there, as in chart 2. Pluto and Mercury are both in the 8th, as in chart 2. The interpretation has only subtle changes, especially when delineating one-to-one relationships and also responses to and from the public.

In the fall of 1982 ACT published the long awaited “Gauquelin Book of American Charts,” based on copies off birth certificates seen by the authors. For John Glenn it states: July 18, 1921 3:00 p.m. EDT in Cambridge, Ohio. Now we have quite a different horoscope. 9 Scorpio on the Ascendant and the fullest 9th house you ever want to see. 5 planets, including the chart ruler Pluto and the Sun. The only 8th house emphasis is Venus which is involved in the T-square. I don’t want to spend too much time with this chart, because we soon heard divergent voices from all parts of the country.

The final upshot seems to be this: Fact No. 1: the birth certificate states 3:00 p.m. without identifying time zone or whether it was standard or daylight savings time. Fact No. 2, Tom Shanks of Astro-Computing Services who worked with the Gauquelins, states in the 37th edition (April) of “Mercury Hour:” “Reviewing sources for clarification, those cities on Central Time were using Summer Time, while those on Eastern Time were not.” Fact No. 3, the birth time is either 3:00 p.m. EST or 3:00 p.m. CDT – both of course bringing the same results and we hope THE REAL CHART.

John Herschel Glenn, Jr. has a typical middle-class, middle America background. His father was a railroad conductor who later owned plumbing and auto businesses. John grew up and went to school in New Concord, near his birthplace. he married his high school sweetheart Anna in 1943, after joining the naval aviation program in 1942 and taking his commission in the Marine Corps. He flew 59 missions during WW2, won many medals and as a major, in 1952 flew 90 combat missions in Korea, earning him additional decorations. In 1954 he completed his test pilot training and made the first transcontinental nonstop supersonic flight in 1957. In 1959, shortly after being promoted to lieutenant colonel, he was one of seven men selected for the Project Mercury astronaut training program. On February 7, 1962 he piloted his “Friendship 7” capsule over three earth orbits, travelling some 81,000 miles in less than 5 hours. Tickertape parades established Glenn as a popular hero. In 1964 he entered the Ohio senatorial primary election, but an accidental injury forced him out of the race. He became an executive with the Royal Crown Cola Company and in 1974 he ran successfully [to be elected] as senator from Ohio [Democrat], a position he still holds. [Editor’s note: by 2000, his seat had been won by a Republican.] The Glenns have 2 children, a boy and a girl.

What does the REAL chart show us? Scorpio rising and the ruler Pluto in the 8th house of public support, conjunct Mercury, giving him an innate understanding of human nature, a great curiosity to explore the unknown and a good ability to convince others or convert them to his opinions. The Sun in Cancer in the 9th makes him sensitive as well as tenacious, eager to study things on a larger scale; the Mars conjunction will add much willfulness, a very competitive spirit and good old-fashioned courage. the Moon gives the Cancer stellium and in Capricorn gives Glenn a serious and shy personality. The 2nd house placement emphasizes his need for security through money, personal recognition and achievements. The Moon has many difficult aspects; it is involved in a yod (sextile Uranus, quincunx Neptune) and in a Boomerang (quincunx Neptune and Venus, opposition Mercury); it also opposes Mars and Pluto, showing that Glenn had to make many emotional adjustments and probably wears a strong self-protective mask, letting only loved ones near enough to see and feel his vulnerability.

The T-square [in this chart] is placed in angular houses and therefore more action oriented. Taurus on the cusp of the 7th house and ruler Venus in it promises a good marriage, though both the lunar and Venusian aspects indicate some early problems with the mother and [with the] anima within [Glenn’s own psyche]. Since he is still married to the same woman, we assume he has matured in this area and overcome the difficulties. There is no time for an in-depth delineation, but I want to mention that [from 1983 to 1984 by solar arc progression, Saturn will conjunct the Ascendant while the progressed Ascendant at 20 Capricorn will trine Saturn. The solar arc Moon at 12 Pisces sextiles the Moon, trines mercury and inconjuncts Neptune.

The secondary progression shows the Midheaven at 8 Scorpio, trine Pluto. Venus at 21 Leo will square the Ascendant. mars is just ready to enter Virgo; the Moon moves from approximately 13 Aries to 25 Aries. The time period is summer 1983 to summer 1984, or “primary” time [for U.S. elections]. Transits do not look very promising. Saturn in the hidden 12th (where it didn’t do President Carter much good), Pluto is also there while Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune are all below the horizon. A pity at that, since Glenn has many good connections to the U.S. chart.

Editor’s note:
[In 1984 Glenn floated a presidential bid in the Democratic primaries, but lost Walter Mondale. He made another primary bid in 1988, losing out to Michael Dukakis. In 1998, as a serving U.S. Senator, he once again made history by flying into space as a mission specialist aboard the space shuttle “Discovery.”]
